Likely new positions: volume far above open interest
Contracts expiring after the session that traded at least 2,000 times and 5 times their open interest at the start of the day, with $100K or more of premium, ranked by premium. Deep in-the-money contracts (more than 5% in) are left out, because they are mostly synthetic stock. Most of this volume opened positions, though the data cannot say whether bought or sold.

How the lists are built
After each close we save every listed option on about 2,900 US stocks and ETFs with its day volume, volume-weighted price and open interest at the start of the day. Premium is contracts times that price times 100. Out of the money compares the strike with the stock's close: a call above it, a put below it. Same-day contracts expire on the session itself.
Funds are tagged, not removed, and a stocks-only ranking sits beside the combined one. Every row is a description of the session; none of it says who bought or sold, and none of it is a recommendation.
Data: Daily option chains from a market data vendor: each contract's day volume, volume-weighted price and start-of-day open interest; closing prices. Download: most_active.json.
Furthest out-of-the-money call traded in size: CIFR Jun 16 '28 45 call, 407% above the stock, 10,007 contracts for $783K.
Contracts and premium traded, buyers and sellers not told apart. Built after the close. Descriptions, not advice.
How Most Active Options Works
- 1Contracts and premium are different questionsContract counts are led by the index funds’ same-day expiries, which trade millions of cheap contracts. Premium, contracts times the price paid, shows where the money went, and a high-priced stock can lead it on a fraction of the contracts.
- 2Out-of-the-money premiumDeep in-the-money options trade like the stock itself and carry most of the premium in expensive names. Money paid for options that were out of the money at the close has no intrinsic value behind it, so it is the closer measure of a bet.
- 3Volume against open interestOpen interest is the count of contracts outstanding at the start of the day. A contract that traded many times its open interest was mostly opened that day, which is how a new position shows up in the daily data.
