These tables rank individual strike × expiration series by open interest. They reveal where positions are concentrated, but OI alone does not identify who owns the contracts or whether a trade is outright, hedged, or part of a spread. Near-spot rows may become hedging landmarks; far-tail rows describe distant positioning, not immediate support or resistance.

Confirmations and divergences

How the charts’ marked dates are defined: five fixed rules that compare what options price with what the price is doing. They retain their original thresholds. The corrected study uses each rule’s required inputs and counts episode starts before checking whether their next 21 sessions are complete. Percentile rules require 120 earlier valid readings; every rule waits at least 120 sessions. Missing inputs make a state unavailable. Historical results are retrospective associations, not established forecasts. The earliest eligible state here begins April 14, 2025.

Fear confirms the falllast Jul 8, 2026
Options confirm the selloff: implied volatility is high and the near term is priced above the longer term.

The retrospective association runs in the opposite direction: the rule predicted a weaker month and got a stronger one. The 27 episodes fall in 7 calendar months, so much of the count is the same market moves seen in several symbols.
Price condition alone: 37 episodes, median +6.2%. This removes the options conditions on the same eligible calendar.

Matched price conditions: 9 matched episodes; median paired gap −5.8 pts (95% month-block interval −20.7 pts to +2.2 pts). Matching does not establish predictive value.

Next month = 21 trading sessions. Each rule uses its own eligible baseline for the median, bootstrap and symbol sign agreement. Association requires a 95% month-block interval excluding zero and agreement across two thirds of symbols; 1 meet that descriptive criterion. Matched controls use the same symbol, within 3 percentage points of 20-session return and drawdown, and 15 volatility points of realized volatility, separated from event windows by more than 21 sessions. These comparisons use the historical sample. 0 completed prospective episodes so far across the unleveraged study symbols. A separate prospective record freezes new detections after October 18, 2026 and fills outcomes only once 21 sessions have elapsed. No prospective forecasting claim is established yet.

  • Implied volatility is computed from each contract’s daily close against the underlying close (Black-Scholes with the dividend yield and the fed funds rate), using weekly expiries within 200 days, a strike range of 0.75–1.25× spot, and contracts with at least 10 traded and a close of $0.05 or more.
  • Last trades are not one synchronized surface: within an expiry, a put cannot cost less than a lower-strike put (nor a call more than a lower-strike call), and contracts whose last trades break that are dropped, the thinner-traded one first. On Oct 19, 2026 that removed 3% of the traded contracts (median 1% across the history).
  • Closes are last trades, not synchronized quotes, and American options are treated as European. Dividend yield uses trailing distributions, which can be especially unstable for leveraged funds. The per-symbol vendor comparison above measures disagreement between two models and price inputs, not accuracy against a known true volatility.
  • The history starts in October 2024, as far back as our data plan serves daily option prices, and lengthens every day. Open interest cannot be rebuilt for past days, so its history builds forward from the first daily chain snapshot (2026-10-16, 2 daily snapshots so far); the OCC put/call record starts October 22, 2024.
  • The states remain descriptive. Price-only and matched comparisons test whether the options conditions add information; a short, revised historical sample cannot establish that they will forecast future returns.

How MSFT Options Works

  1. 1
    Price every traded contract
Each day, every weekly-expiry contract inside the symbol’s strike band (wider and volatility-aware for leveraged funds) with at least 10 contracts traded gets an implied volatility, computed from its close against the underlying close with a Black-Scholes model, the fed funds rate and the dividend yield.
  2. 2
    Build the surface
For each expiry, at-the-money IV comes from out-of-the-money options at the forward price, and the 25-delta put, 25-delta call and 10-delta put from interpolation by delta. Each is then interpolated across expiries to fixed maturities of 7 to 180 days.
  3. 3
Read it against its own history
Skew, volatility, term structure, open interest and put/call volume are each ranked against the symbol's own earlier days, so a reading means the same thing for Nvidia as for the S&P 500.
  4. 4
Name the state, then grade it
Five fixed rules turn the readings into confirmations and divergences with the price. The rules were written down before any result was examined, and each is compared with its eligible days, a price-only rule and matched price conditions across the unleveraged symbols (leveraged and inverse funds re-express QQQ and SMH, so they would count the same moves twice).

Who Uses MSFT Options

Traders checking a move
Whether options confirm a rally or a selloff, or price it differently: protection bought into strength, calls chased on the way up, stress fading after a fall.
Option sellers and buyers
Whether volatility is rich or cheap against what the stock has actually done, and where the term structure and skew sit in their own history.
Anyone sizing a position
The implied move to the next weekly expiry and over a month, in dollars and percent, from the options market itself.

Pro Tips

01
Skew is relative
Broad equity-index options often price downside volatility above upside volatility. What matters is where the skew sits against its own history, which is what the percentiles show.
02
An inverted curve is stress
When 30-day IV is above 90-day, the market expects the turbulence to be near-term. It is normal for a few days around a shock and unusual for long.
03
Stocks behave differently
Single stocks often have flatter or even upside skew, and earnings dates lift the near-term IV on schedule. Compare a stock with its own history before comparing it with the index.

Common Issues & Solutions

Why is the history only two years long?▾
Our data plan serves daily option prices for about the last two years. The archive started in October 2026 keeps everything from then on, so the history lengthens every day.
Why do the numbers differ from my broker?▾
Brokers compute IV from live quotes; this page uses each contract's daily close and the underlying close, treats American options as European, and only uses contracts with at least 10 contracts traded. The per-symbol validation panel reports the actual gap against saved vendor IV; differences can be material, especially for leveraged funds.
Why does the open-interest history start later than the rest?▾
Prices and volume could be rebuilt from daily contract bars back to October 2024, but open interest is only published as a snapshot of the day, so its history starts with our first daily capture and grows from there. The put/call volume record comes from the OCC, which keeps two years.
