How Momentum Scanner (7-Factor Composite) Works
- 1Scan the full US equity universe every dayAfter every market close we pull daily OHLCV bars for the full US universe and score each stock that has enough trading history. The scan is recomputed from scratch every day — there is no static watchlist.
- 2Score seven independent momentum factorsEach stock is graded 0–100 on seven factors: Price Performance (25%) blends 1- and 3-month returns with the R² of a linear regression through price, rewarding smooth advances over choppy ones. Bullish Candles (15%) measures the share of strong up-days. MA Alignment (15%) checks that the 10-, 20-, and 50-day moving averages are stacked bullishly and sloping up. Trend Consistency (15%) rewards higher highs/lows and shallow pullbacks. Volatility (10%) favours stable ATR and orderly ranges. Volume (10%) looks at up/down volume balance and recent surges. Relative Strength (10%) measures outperformance versus SPY.
- 3Blend the factors into one composite scoreThe seven factor scores are combined with the weights above into a single 0–100 momentum score. A high composite means a stock is strong across multiple, independent dimensions — not just up a lot on one noisy metric.
- 4Rank and keep only the 60-plus namesEvery qualifying stock is ranked by composite score, highest first. We publish only the names scoring 60 or higher — the threshold that, in our testing, separates genuine multi-factor leaders from stocks that merely rallied recently. The table shows roughly 100 names on a typical day.
Who Uses Momentum Scanner (7-Factor Composite)
Momentum Traders
Start the day with a pre-ranked shortlist of the strongest names in the market instead of scanning thousands of charts by hand. The composite score does the first cut; you do the discretionary work on the top of the list.
Swing Traders
Filter for high trend-consistency and MA-alignment sub-scores to find stocks in clean, orderly uptrends that pull back shallowly — the kind that offer low-risk continuation entries rather than parabolic blow-offs.
Relative-Strength Investors
Sort by the relative-strength factor to surface stocks decisively outperforming SPY. Persistent leaders tend to keep leading; this is the universe to rotate into when the broad market is healthy.
Watchlist Builders
Use the scanner as a daily idea funnel: names that climb the rankings over consecutive sessions are gaining multi-factor strength, while names dropping off the 60-plus list are losing it.
Pro Tips
01
Read the sub-scores, not just the headline number
Two stocks can share an 80 composite for very different reasons. One driven by price performance with weak volume is a different trade than one with balanced strength across all seven factors. Expand the factor columns before you commit.
02
Smoothness beats raw return
The price-performance factor rewards a high regression R² — a steady, low-noise advance. A stock up 40% in a straight line scores higher than one up 60% in violent swings, because the smoother trend is more tradeable and more likely to persist.
03
Mind the distance from the 52-week high
A stock ranked highly but sitting many days/percent below its 52-week high is consolidating or rolling over. Names hugging fresh highs with a strong composite are showing the cleanest momentum.
04
Cross-check momentum with market breadth
A long list of 60-plus names usually coincides with healthy participation. When the list thins out day over day, broad momentum is fading even if the index holds — a reason to tighten risk.
Common Issues & Solutions
Why are there only ~100 stocks, not thousands?▾
We scan the full universe but publish only stocks scoring 60 or higher on the composite. On most days that is roughly 100 names. The count itself is informative: a long list signals broad momentum, a short list signals narrow leadership.
A stock I expected to see is not on the list▾
It either scored below 60 or lacks enough trading history to compute the longer-horizon factors. A stock can be up sharply on raw price yet still score below 60 if its advance is choppy, on weak volume, or not confirmed by moving-average alignment and relative strength.
The score is high but the stock looks extended▾
A high composite measures the strength of momentum, not the entry timing. Use the distance-from-52-week-high and the 1-month return to judge whether you are buying a fresh breakout or chasing an extended move that may need to digest first.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is a momentum scanner?▾
A momentum scanner ranks stocks by the strength of their recent price trend. This one goes beyond raw return: it scores every stock in the US universe on seven independent momentum factors and blends them into a single 0–100 composite, then ranks the strongest names highest. It is recomputed daily after the close.
What are the seven factors and how are they weighted?▾
Price Performance (25%) — 1- and 3-month returns plus the R² of a regression through price. Bullish Candles (15%) — share of strong up-days. MA Alignment (15%) — 10/20/50-day moving averages stacked and sloping up. Trend Consistency (15%) — higher highs/lows and shallow pullbacks. Volatility (10%) — ATR stability and orderly ranges. Volume (10%) — up/down volume balance and surges. Relative Strength (10%) — outperformance versus SPY.
What does the momentum score mean?▾
It is a 0–100 composite of the seven weighted factors. Higher means the stock is strong across multiple independent dimensions, not just up on one noisy metric. We publish only stocks scoring 60 or higher — the threshold that separates genuine multi-factor leaders from stocks that merely rallied recently.
How many stocks are scanned?▾
The scan runs across the full US equity universe every day. Only stocks scoring 60 or higher on the composite are published, which is typically around 100 names. Stocks without enough trading history to compute the longer-horizon factors are excluded.
How often is the scanner updated?▾
Every trading day, after the market close. The entire universe is re-scored from fresh daily OHLCV data, so the rankings reflect the most recent completed session.
Is the momentum scanner free?▾
Yes. The full ranked list, all seven factor sub-scores, and the trailing returns are free to use, with no account required.
How should I use the rankings?▾
Treat them as a pre-ranked shortlist, not buy signals. Use the composite for the first cut, then read the sub-scores to understand why a stock ranks where it does, check its distance from the 52-week high to judge timing, and confirm with your own analysis before trading.
