GLD Options: What the Market Is Pricing
Gold (GLD): implied volatility against what the price has actually done, the price of downside protection against upside, the shape of the term structure and the smile, and whether options confirm or contradict the move in the price.

- Volatility: 30-day at-the-money implied volatility was 20.4%, the 49th percentile since 2024, against 20.8% realized over the last 21 sessions.
- Protection: the 25-delta put traded +0.4 pts over the 25-delta call (66th percentile), and the 10-delta put +2.5 pts over at-the-money (71st percentile).
- What changed: over the month, 30-day IV moved −0.6 pts, the put skew +1.8 pts, and the term structure is upward sloping (30-day −0.1 pts against 90-day).
Implied against realized volatility
30-day at-the-money implied volatility and the volatility the price actually delivered over the previous 21 sessions. Implied volatility usually exceeds recent realized volatility; the gap looks backward and is not a profit anyone has earned.
The price of protection
The 25-delta put’s implied volatility minus the 25-delta call’s at 30 days. Higher means investors pay more for downside protection relative to upside. It reads +0.4 pts, the 66th percentile, against −1.4 pts a month ago.
Tail premium and call skew
Term structure
Implied volatility by maturity today and a month ago, then the 30-day minus the 90-day over time. Above zero, the near term is priced above the longer term, the shape of stress.
The smile
Implied volatility by strike for the expiry nearest 30 days, out-of-the-money puts to the left of the price and calls to the right, today against a month ago.
Positioning across expirations
Snapshot: 2026-10-19 · captured 2026-10-19T20:56:26.681405+00:00. OI effective date: not separately supplied. Vendor reports open interest at the end of the last trading day; the response does not identify its effective date.
The horizon split
The headline all-expiration book is 0.481, while the ≤7-day book is 0.598. The near-term and standing books carry a similar mix of puts and calls, so the headline ratio is not hiding a different near-term picture.

No threshold bands: they are calibrated on SPY, and a single stock or commodity fund carries a different normal mix of puts and calls. Read the ratio against this symbol's own history below.

Dealer walls and large positions
These tables rank individual strike × expiration series by open interest. They reveal where positions are concentrated, but OI alone does not identify who owns the contracts or whether a trade is outright, hedged, or part of a spread. Near-spot rows may become hedging landmarks; far-tail rows describe distant positioning, not immediate support or resistance.

P/C history
P/C OI Ratio History
Daily all-expiration P/C OI ratio with GLD overlay. Historical chains aren't served by the source API, so this record accumulates forward from 2026-10-16.
2 daily snapshots captured so far.
Put and call volume cleared by the OCC across every US exchange and every expiry, same-day included, since October 22, 2024, with the customer-only ratio that leaves out market makers’ hedging. A trade can be a purchase or a sale, so volume measures activity, not direction.
Contracts: OCC cleared volume across all expiries; 498 daily observations.
Call volume
Put volume
Put/Call volume ratio
Puts ÷ calls per session. Index funds structurally trade more puts than calls (they are the market's hedging vehicles), and single stocks usually the reverse: judge readings against the series' own range, not 1.0.
Confirmations and divergences
How the charts’ marked dates are defined: five fixed rules that compare what options price with what the price is doing. They retain their original thresholds. The corrected study uses each rule’s required inputs and counts episode starts before checking whether their next 21 sessions are complete. Percentile rules require 120 earlier valid readings; every rule waits at least 120 sessions. Missing inputs make a state unavailable. Historical results are retrospective associations, not established forecasts. The earliest eligible state here begins April 14, 2025.
Next month = 21 trading sessions. Each rule uses its own eligible baseline for the median, bootstrap and symbol sign agreement. Association requires a 95% month-block interval excluding zero and agreement across two thirds of symbols; 1 meet that descriptive criterion. Matched controls use the same symbol, within 3 percentage points of 20-session return and drawdown, and 15 volatility points of realized volatility, separated from event windows by more than 21 sessions. These comparisons use the historical sample. 0 completed prospective episodes so far across the unleveraged study symbols. A separate prospective record freezes new detections after October 18, 2026 and fills outcomes only once 21 sessions have elapsed. No prospective forecasting claim is established yet.

- Implied volatility is computed from each contract’s daily close against the underlying close (Black-Scholes with the dividend yield and the fed funds rate), using weekly expiries within 200 days, a strike range of 0.75–1.25× spot, and contracts with at least 10 traded and a close of $0.05 or more.
- Last trades are not one synchronized surface: within an expiry, a put cannot cost less than a lower-strike put (nor a call more than a lower-strike call), and contracts whose last trades break that are dropped, the thinner-traded one first. On Oct 19, 2026 that removed 12% of the traded contracts (median 4% across the history).
- Closes are last trades, not synchronized quotes, and American options are treated as European. Dividend yield uses trailing distributions, which can be especially unstable for leveraged funds. The per-symbol vendor comparison above measures disagreement between two models and price inputs, not accuracy against a known true volatility.
- The history starts in October 2024, as far back as our data plan serves daily option prices, and lengthens every day. Open interest cannot be rebuilt for past days, so its history builds forward from the first daily chain snapshot (2026-10-16, 2 daily snapshots so far); the OCC put/call record starts October 22, 2024.
- The states remain descriptive. Price-only and matched comparisons test whether the options conditions add information; a short, revised historical sample cannot establish that they will forecast future returns.

How GLD Options Works
- 1Price every traded contractEach day, every weekly-expiry contract inside the symbol’s strike band (wider and volatility-aware for leveraged funds) with at least 10 contracts traded gets an implied volatility, computed from its close against the underlying close with a Black-Scholes model, the fed funds rate and the dividend yield.
- 2Build the surfaceFor each expiry, at-the-money IV comes from out-of-the-money options at the forward price, and the 25-delta put, 25-delta call and 10-delta put from interpolation by delta. Each is then interpolated across expiries to fixed maturities of 7 to 180 days.
- 3Read it against its own historySkew, volatility, term structure, open interest and put/call volume are each ranked against the symbol's own earlier days, so a reading means the same thing for Nvidia as for the S&P 500.
- 4Name the state, then grade itFive fixed rules turn the readings into confirmations and divergences with the price. The rules were written down before any result was examined, and each is compared with its eligible days, a price-only rule and matched price conditions across the unleveraged symbols (leveraged and inverse funds re-express QQQ and SMH, so they would count the same moves twice).
