Every print of the order as it crossed the tape, in the time-and-sales layout. Prices in green printed at the ask, in red at the bid. Delta and implied volatility are solved from each print's own price against GLD at $368.49 (Black-Scholes, fed funds, no dividend), so they differ slightly from a broker's. Totals weight price and quote by size. "Read" is our reading of the side, explained next.

02

What most likely happened

At 15:46 ET, 4,000 Oct 30 368 puts traded together in one order on NYSE, the same size on every leg: one trader, one decision.

A trader bought a large block of puts on the gold fund, struck right at the market and expiring next week, paying the full offer in the last quarter hour of a session in which gold had already fallen hard on heavy volume. The day's volume at that strike was many times its open interest, so the order opened a new position rather than closing an old one. Paying the offer for near-the-money protection that lasts only days is an expensive way to insure a holding and a direct way to bet on a further fall, so the clearer read is a short-term bearish bet that the slide in gold continues.

The evidence. The print filled at the offer of the quote standing at the time. Open interest at the strike before the session was a small fraction of the order, so most of it must be opening. The underlying price is the fund's last trade at the time of the print. The order filled 0% of the way from the price at which the read's initiator crosses the whole quote (−$1.86M) to the price at which they are paid it (−$1.80M): below the midpoint, which supports the read.

The other read. A large holder of the fund bought short-dated protection for a specific stretch of days, such as an event next week, and was willing to pay up to get it done before the close. The tape cannot tell a hedge from a bet; the size of the holding it would cover is plausible for an institution that owns gold through the fund.
