VIX rose 70% in a day, the third-largest jump since 2010; eight days have risen 50% or more

SPY on a log scale in a top pane above the VIX daily close since December 2009, with red dots at the eight days VIX rose 50% or more in a session: August 2011, February 2018, January 2021, November 2021, August 2024, December 2024, April 2025 and November 5, 2026, which ends at 28.2.

VIX closed at 28.18 on November 5, 2026, up 69.7% on the day, as SPY fell 4.4%. In our daily record, which begins at the end of 2009, only two sessions saw a larger one-day rise: February 5, 2018, at 115.6%, and December 18, 2024, at 74.0%. Eight sessions in the record rose 50% or more: August 8, 2011, February 5, 2018, January 27, 2021, November 26, 2021, August 5, 2024, December 18, 2024, April 4, 2025 and today.

After the seven earlier jumps SPY was higher 21 sessions later every time, by a median of 3.9%, and higher 63 sessions later in five of the seven, by a median of 10.4%. The two that were lower a quarter on were November 2021, the start of the 2022 decline, and December 2024. A jump of this size says the market repriced risk in one session; seven cases say what followed on those occasions and nothing about the eighth.
