Producer prices are at a record and rising 12.8% a year, the fastest since 2022

The Producer Price Index rose 12.8% in the twelve months to September 2026 (released October 16), the fastest rise since September 2022. A year earlier the rate was 3.7%, and in June 2025 it was 1.8%. The index level, 295.7, is the highest in a record that starts in January 1913, and the last three months annualize at 14.2%.
Two earlier surges ran faster: the 2021 one peaked at 22.7% in November 2021, and the 1974 one at 23.4%. This rise starts from a level close to the 2022 peak, which is why a 12.8% gain sets a record level. The chart shows the twelve-month change since 1990 with the index level above it; it describes producer prices and says nothing about where consumer prices go next.
