Every print of the order as it crossed the tape, in the time-and-sales layout. Prices in green printed at the ask, in red at the bid. Delta and implied volatility are solved from each print's own price against SMH at $515.98 (Black-Scholes, fed funds, no dividend), so they differ slightly from a broker's. What most likely happened
At 13:57 ET, 10,000 Nov 6 470 puts and 10,000 Nov 6 465 puts traded together in one order on BOX, the same size on every leg: one trader, one decision.
Open interest before the session: Nov 6 470 put 3,236 with 10,000 traded; Nov 6 465 put 750 with 10,000 traded. A strike that held about the traded size was being closed; one that held almost none was being opened.
Our read is a likely new bearish put debit spread. The higher-strike put appears to have been bought at its offer while the lower-strike put was sold above its midpoint, so the package filled toward the offer side of its implied quote, which supports a buyer-initiated read. Both strikes sat below the fund's price at the time of the trade and the spread expires at the end of the week, so this is a short-dated bet on a further decline rather than long-dated protection. It earns its full expiration profit if SMH closes at or below the lower strike on Friday and loses the whole debit if SMH finishes at or above the upper strike; the loss is capped at the debit paid, which is small next to the maximum gain because both puts were well out of the money. Opening status and initiator direction are inferred; the payoff and exposure assume a new position in this direction.
The evidence. Both legs carry the same timestamp, quantity, exchange and spread label. The higher-strike put printed at its ask and the lower-strike put above the midpoint of its quote; the paired net debit sits toward the offer side of the implied package quote. The later chain snapshot supplies prior open interest and cumulative session volume at both strikes, with volume above prior open interest at each; its later quotes are not used to classify the earlier execution, and the fund had fallen further by the capture. These counts are frozen and are not refreshed with daily marks. The screenshot clock is interpreted as Pacific time and converted to Eastern; the chain capture time uses the screenshot timestamp. The order filled 30% of the way from the price at which the read's initiator crosses the whole quote (−$480K) to the price at which they are paid it (−$180K): below the midpoint, which supports the read.
The other read. The opposite initiator, selling the put spread for a credit and so betting that SMH holds above the upper strike through Friday, is possible, although the fill sits toward the buyer's side of the package quote. The spread could also close an existing position, or protect a large semiconductor holding for the week, and a hedge of that kind is not a directional bet. Prior open interest at the lower strike was a small fraction of the block, which makes a pure closing trade there unlikely, but intraday opening and closing activity can both lift volume above prior open interest, and the tape cannot establish the initiating account or its purpose.
