Every print of the order as it crossed the tape, in the time-and-sales layout. Prices in green printed at the ask, in red at the bid. Delta and implied volatility are solved from each print's own price against VOYA at $95.45 (Black-Scholes, fed funds, no dividend), so they differ slightly from a broker's. Totals weight price and quote by size. "Read" is our reading of the side, explained next.
What most likely happened
At 10:43 ET, 10,000 Nov 20 110 calls and 10,000 Dec 18 105 calls traded together in one order on PHLX, the same size on every leg: one trader, one decision.
Earlier, at 10:30 ET: 1,150 Dec 18 105 calls at $2.00 on PHLX (quote 1.20 × 2.35), most likely the same buyer starting the December position before the roll. It is not counted in this bet's figures.
Open interest before the session: Nov 20 110 call 10,101 with 10,000 traded; Dec 18 105 call 3 with 10,000 traded. A strike that held about the traded size was being closed; one that held almost none was being opened.
Likely read. A holder of out-of-the-money November calls sold the whole position and, in the same order, bought the same number of December calls at a lower strike: a roll down and out. The new calls sit closer to the stock and run past the company's usual late-October or early-November earnings report, so the holder paid up to keep the bet alive through it and more than doubled its sensitivity to the stock. This is a trader adding to a bullish view, not one cutting a loss.
In numbers: the order cost $1.73M net. The position it closed behaved like 128,700 VOYA shares long; the one it opened behaves like 295,400 long, so the holder kept the bet and added to its size by about 166,700 shares, while pushing its expiry to Dec 18, 2026.
The evidence. Open interest settles which leg closed and which opened: the November strike held almost exactly the size that traded, and the December strike held almost none. The November call printed near its bid and the December call near its ask. The order filled 8% of the way from the price at which the read's initiator crosses the whole quote (−$1.80M) to the price at which they are paid it (−$900K): below the midpoint, which supports the read.
The other read. Two different traders: one closing November calls and another opening December ones, matched in a single complex order by a dealer. The identical size and single order make that unlikely.
