Every print of the order as it crossed the tape, in the time-and-sales layout. Prices in green printed at the ask, in red at the bid. Delta and implied volatility are solved from each print's own price against SOXS at $46.43 (Black-Scholes, fed funds, no dividend), so they differ slightly from a broker's. Totals weight price and quote by size. "Read" is our reading of the side, explained next.
What most likely happened
At 10:24 ET, 1,811 Oct 30 32 calls and 1,811 Dec 18 34 calls traded together in one order across 4 exchanges, the same size on every leg: one trader, one decision.
Leaning read. A trader who was already short the October calls bought them back and, in the same order, sold the same number of December calls at a higher strike: a roll. Both calls are deep in the money, so each moves almost one for one with SOXS, and being short them works like being short the fund without borrowing shares. Shorting a −3x fund is the classic decay trade: SOXS loses value whenever semiconductors swing, so the position makes money if semiconductors rise or simply go nowhere, and loses only if they fall hard. Few holders keep a 3x inverse fund for months, which makes a covered call on owned SOXS shares the less likely setup. Rolling instead of letting the October calls run to expiry keeps the bet alive into December and collects fresh time value for it.
In numbers: the order collected $80K net. The position it closed behaved like 167,210 SOXS shares short; the one it opened behaves like 148,067 short, so the holder kept the bet and trimmed its size by about 19,143 shares, while pushing its expiry to Dec 18, 2026.
The evidence. The tape does not say which side started a complex order. The read rests on where the package filled within its quote and on the October leg printing at its ask on BOX. The order filled 40% of the way from the price at which the read's initiator crosses the whole quote (−$83K) to the price at which they are paid it (+$326K): below the midpoint, which supports the read.
The other read. The opposite side: a holder of long October calls sold them and bought December calls, rolling a bearish semiconductor bet out to December.
Scenarios to the Dec 18 expiry
Where SOXS and SMH would end if semiconductors moved evenly to each level by Dec 18, 2026, at a steady 37% volatility. SOXS's paths bend down because of the daily reset, so a flat semiconductors still leaves SOXS lower. The solid line is the breakeven.

What the position makes or loses
Breakeven at the Dec 18 expiry: SOXS at $49.43 (+6.5% from entry), which takes semiconductors −6.2% by then (SMH near $514.86) once the fund's decay is counted. The loss has no limit if SOXS keeps rising. The most it can make at expiry is $2.80M. Behaves like short 148,067 SOXS shares ($6.87M), which at 3× is about $20.62M long semiconductors.
A 3× fund that resets daily loses value when its index swings: at semiconductors' recent volatility (37% a year, SMH realized, 63 sessions), SOXS would end near $40.76 on Dec 18 if semiconductors finished flat, −12.2% from the trade, and the position would show +$1.57M.
Profit or loss of the open position against what it was opened for, across SOXS prices from $31.62 to $53.39. The second axis is the move in semiconductors by expiry that would leave SOXS there, counting the decay above at constant volatility; a calmer market decays the fund less and a wilder one more. Black-Scholes on each leg's implied volatility at the fed funds rate.
The money behind it
Estimates under Cboe's published rules. A short option covered by a long one is charged the spread's width (nothing for a debit spread); an uncovered one is charged its value plus 60% of SOXS's price (the standard share times the leverage), less any out-of-the-money amount, with a floor. Portfolio margin is the worst loss of the whole position within its price range, which ignores moves beyond it: a tail the standard figure prices and portfolio margin does not. Brokers can require more, and an account holding offsetting positions less.
