Retail diesel follows wholesale ULSD with a lag of a week or two and a damped amplitude. It matters beyond the pump: diesel is the marginal cost of moving goods, so a diesel spike shows up in trucking rates, food prices and PPI before it reaches CPI. Retail Diesel is sourced from EIA via the Federal Reserve's FRED service (EIA via FRED (GASDESW), weekly, dollars per gallon, not seasonally adjusted). We pull the complete history, chart it on a weekly basis, overlay SPY for context, and generate a dated plain-English reading from the latest release — with no smoothing or adjustment beyond what the chart legend states.
