Cash flow & free cash flow

10-Qs file cash flow statements as cumulative year-to-date periods, so the quarterly figures here are differenced from consecutive filings and flagged. Free cash flow is the common convention — operating cash flow minus capital expenditures — computed from the two filed lines.

How CME Group Financials Works

  1. 1
Pull company facts from SEC EDGAR
Each covered company's full XBRL fact history comes from the SEC's keyless companyfacts API — the same numbers the company filed in its 10-Qs and 10-Ks, with no third-party normalization. Every company tags its statements differently, so each stock has an explicit per-line concept map maintained by hand.
  2. 2
Resolve each period to one value
The same figure appears in multiple filings — the original quarter, the annual report, later comparative columns, sometimes restated. Each (period, line) resolves to the latest-filed value, so restatements and split-adjusted comparatives win, and the filing date kept is recorded.
  3. 3
    Derive what companies never file
No company files a Q4 income statement — the fourth quarter is computed as the fiscal year minus the first nine months. Quarterly cash flows are differenced from the cumulative year-to-date statements 10-Qs actually contain. Every derived figure is flagged on the page; per-share numbers are never derived because share counts differ per quarter.
  4. 4
    Respect the fiscal calendar
Covered companies end their years in different months (NVIDIA in late January, Apple in late September) and some use 52/53-week calendars. Periods are labeled with each company's own fiscal quarters and exact reported end dates — never forced onto calendar quarters.

Who Uses CME Group Financials

Earnings-season readers
See the new quarter in context the press release never gives: the full quarterly history behind it, margins over time, and how the cash flow compares to the reported profit.
Long-term holders
The annual tables are the decade view — revenue, margins, share count and free cash flow across fiscal years, as filed with the SEC rather than as summarized by a data vendor.
Narrative checkers
When a claim circulates about a company's spending, buybacks or cash position, the filed number is here with its statement, period and derivation status.
Cross-tool researchers
Names surfaced by the 13F consensus, momentum or flow tools link here where covered — positioning and price action on one side, the filed fundamentals on the other.

Pro Tips

01
GAAP will not match the headline number
Press releases lead with adjusted (non-GAAP) figures; these tables are GAAP as filed. A large gap between the two — usually stock compensation or one-time items — is itself information.
02
Watch the derived-quarter flags
Fourth quarters are computed (fiscal year minus nine months), so a Q4 anomaly can reflect a full-year true-up landing in the residual rather than something that happened in the quarter.
03
Free cash flow is a convention
FCF here is operating cash flow minus capital expenditures — the common definition, but not the only one. Companies with heavy finance leases or capitalized content spend (streaming, cloud) can look different under other definitions.
04
Compare fiscal quarters, not calendar quarters
A company with a January year-end reports its "Q4" holiday quarter when others report Q1. Cross-company comparisons should match period end dates, which every table here shows.

Common Issues & Solutions

The latest quarter is missing
This dataset refreshes manually each earnings season, outside the daily pipeline — a new 10-Q can post to EDGAR days before the refresh runs. The as-of date on each page states the data vintage.
A number differs from the earnings press release
These are GAAP figures from the XBRL filing. Press releases usually lead with non-GAAP adjusted numbers, and occasionally a figure is restated in a later filing — the latest-filed value wins here.
A line item is blank for some periods
Companies change what they disclose and how they tag it. A blank cell means the company did not report that line for that period under any mapped concept — blanks are never filled with estimates.
Old per-share figures look inconsistent with today's
Stock splits restate recent comparatives but not the deep history in SEC data. Per-share series are adjusted to the current share basis where a documented split table exists; any remaining discontinuity is a data limitation and reflects no real move.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where do these numbers come from?
Directly from each company's SEC filings via the EDGAR XBRL company-facts API — the structured data inside 10-Qs and 10-Ks. No third-party fundamentals vendor sits in between, and each company's tagging quirks are mapped by hand.
Why is Q4 marked as derived?
Companies never file a standalone fourth-quarter income statement — the 10-K covers the full year. Q4 is computed as the fiscal year minus the sum of the three reported quarters, which is standard practice; the flag exists so you know which figures were computed rather than read from a filing.
Why do quarterly cash flow numbers need special handling?
Cash flow statements in 10-Qs are cumulative year-to-date — the second quarter's filing covers six months. Quarterly figures are the differences between consecutive year-to-date statements, and they are flagged as derived.
Are these GAAP or adjusted numbers?
GAAP, as filed. Adjusted (non-GAAP) figures companies highlight in press releases — excluding stock compensation and one-time items — are not in the structured filing data and are not shown.
How often does this update?
Manually each earnings season, after covered companies file. This dataset deliberately runs outside the site's daily pipeline: fundamentals change four times a year, and each refresh is validated against known reported figures before it ships.
What does free cash flow mean here?
Operating cash flow minus capital expenditures, computed from the two filed lines and labeled as a convention. It is the most common FCF definition but not the only one.
