    Initial claims for the week to September 12 were 9,000 lower than the week before. Continued claims fell to 1.717 million, the lowest since May 2023.

    Freddie Mac's 30-year average jumped 19 basis points in a week to its highest since January 2025. Two weeks ago it was 6.71%.

    Builders started homes at a 1.275 million annual rate, down from 1.309 million in July and the lowest since May. Single-family starts rose, while apartment starts fell by nearly a quarter.

    Jackson Financial fell 5.6% after a short seller's report

    QVT Financial, which disclosed short positions in Jackson's debt and stock, alleged that its captive reinsurer defers hedge losses, building a $6.8 billion receivable equal to 137% of the insurer's statutory surplus. Jackson had not responded by the close, and the stock ended at $129.38.
